One of the most common questions we get from clients is:
“Do we really have to test our fire alarm every week? Is it a legal requirement?”
The short answer is yes—weekly testing is not just good practice, it’s part of your legal responsibility under UK fire safety regulations.
Why Weekly Fire Alarm Testing Matters
Your fire alarm system is only as good as its ability to work when you need it most. A weekly test is a quick and simple way to make sure:
The alarm sounds properly throughout the building. The system panel shows the correct zone when a call point is activated. There are no faults or power supply issues.
This isn’t just ticking a box—it’s about ensuring the system is ready to save lives.
What the Law Says
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and British Standard BS 5839-1, the “responsible person” for a premises must make sure the fire alarm is maintained in efficient working order. BS 5839-1 specifically recommends that a manual call point is tested once a week at roughly the same time.
While BS 5839-1 is a code of practice rather than law, it’s considered the accepted standard by fire authorities, insurers, and courts. If there’s a fire and your records show you skipped weekly tests, it can be seen as failing your legal duties.
How to Do a Weekly Test
Pick a different manual call point each week. Activate it and check that the alarm sounds correctly across the premises. Reset the system afterwards. Record the test in your fire log book (date, time, location, and result).
It takes just a couple of minutes but gives you peace of mind—and keeps you compliant.
Bottom Line
Weekly fire alarm testing is a legal expectation in practice, even if the exact words aren’t written into the law. It’s simple, quick, and could save lives. Plus, if the worst happens, you’ll have the records to prove you’ve met your responsibilities.
If you’d like, Spartan Fire Protection can provide training for your staff on how to carry out the weekly test properly, or we can handle it for you as part of your maintenance package.
